YOKOHAMA, JAPAN - FC Barcelona won a historic third FIFA Club World Cup on Sunday, defeating South American champions River Plate 3-0 at the Yokahoma International Stadium in Japan. The European winners defeated the Argentine side with an opening goal from Lionel Messi, and two goals from Luis Suarez.


Barcelona became the first club to be crowned world champions three times, adding to their titles in 2009 and 2011. Messi, meanwhile, became the first player to score in three diferent Club World Cup tournaments.


Vancouver Whitecaps FC will look to qualify for the 2017 FIFA Club World Cup when they take part in the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League, starting next year. The 'Caps qualified for the Champions League by winning the 2015 Amway Canadian Championship.
