David Edgar wasn’t the only Vancouver Whitecaps FC player who scored for his country on Tuesday night. Over in San Jose, Costa Rica, Christian Bolaños scored a pair of goals as Costa Rica put an exclamation mark on their World Cup Qualifying round with a 3-1 win over Panama.
The ‘Caps midfielder, who represented his country at the 2006 and 2014 FIFA World Cup tournaments, scored Costa Rica’s first two goals in the 19th and 79th minutes.

Bolaños’ Whitecaps FC and Costa Rican teammate Kendall Waston did not appear in the match, while Vancouver’s Panamanian striker Blas Perez played 14 minutes as a sub.
Costa Rica and Panama had both already secured their berths in the Hex heading into Tuesday’s contest. It was a dominant round for Costa Rica, who finished with an undefeated 5W-0L-1D record and a +8 goal differential.
Joining Costa Rica and Panama in the Hex, the final round of qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in the CONCACAF region, will be Mexico, the U.S., Trinidad & Tobago, and Honduras.
The Hex will begin in November of this year and run through October 2017.
The top three finishers advance directly to the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, while the fourth-placed team will face a team from the Asian Football Confederation in a playoff.
