'Caps suffer 3-0 loss to Sporting KC

VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC suffered a 3-0 loss on Saturday night against Sporting Kansas City at BC Place.

The ‘Caps returned home after four straight road matches across all competitions and head coach Marc Dos Santos shook things up as Theo Bair found himself in the starting XI for the first time. The forward was also named this week to the roster for the MLS Homegrown match against Guadalajara U-20 during the MLS All-Star week.

Whitecaps FC were looking to come out hot, with Bair pushing to also get his first MLS goal. The native of Ottawa, Ontario had one of the best looks in the first half off a pass from Inbeom Hwang; however, his shot was deflected just over the net.

Sporting would record the only goal of the first half. Gerso Fernandes sent the ball towards the net where Ali Adnan tried to clear, instead the ball bounced backwards and into the net in the 24th minute.

Bair and Yordy Reyna tried to build some momentum in the 27th minute off some play making from Hwang but once again Bair's chance went over the net.

In the 56th minute, Sporting doubled the lead as Felipe Gutiérrez capitalized on a turnover.

The ‘Caps had one more chance in the 76th minute when Hwang was taken down for the second time near the top of the 18. Reyna's shot went over the wall to beat the goalkeeper but just couldn’t beat the post.

Sporting’s Gerso add one more goal in the 90th minute to finish the night with a 3-0 score.

Bair played the full 90 minutes and recorded three shots in his first MLS start. Adnan will sit out the 'Caps next game due to yellow card accumulation.

Whitecaps FC are back at on the road this Wednesday, July 17 when they visit New England Revolution. Kickoff at Gillette Stadium is at 4 p.m. PT live on TSN1/3 and TSN Radio 1040. They are back home the following Saturday, July 20 when they host San Jose Earthquakes at BC Place. Visit whitecapsfc.com for ticket information.
