Former 86er Sven Habermann battling Mantle cell lymphoma

Over three decades after achieving history together on the pitch, an old coach from the Vancouver 86ers days is helping his former player against another daunting opponent - Mantle cell lymphoma.

Former goalkeeper Sven Habermann was diagnosed with stage-four cancer in August 2019 and began chemotherapy this past June. Tests have now shown remission but Habermann will require IV infusions every three months for two years of a drug to treat non-Hodgkin's B-cell lymphoma.

"Sven is one of the most colourful, humorous team-first guys that I've ever come across in the game," said Bob Lenarduzzi, Whitecaps FC club liaison. "As evidenced by the many people already donating, he has clearly left his mark on those who have met him over the years. He is a well liked guy, and was a very good goalkeeper as well. I urge anyone who has the means to join us in supporting Sven through this challenging time."

"In addition to being one of the funniest and nicest people I know, Sven is a great human being and was an incredible servant to the club and our successes during his playing career," added Carl Valentine, Whitecaps FC club ambassador. "We're all wishing him the best. It's encouraging to see the support he's already receiving and it's well deserved for the contributions he's made as both a teammate and friend."

Unable to work since October 2020 and being self-employed, Habermann does not qualify for insurance. He has been informed by his transplant team that he cannot go back to work until January 2021 because of a weakened immune system.

Former 86ers assistant coach Alan Errington has organized a fundraiser in Habermann's behalf, hoping to aid his former player with the medical expenses, as well as future financial obligations until Habermann is able to return to work in January.

Both were members of the 1989 champion Vancouver 86ers team that set a North American professional sports record by going 46 consecutive games without defeat.

Habermann played for Vancouver from 1988 to '99, making 45 appearances, while Errington was part of the coaching staff. Errington served as Bob Lenarduzzi’s assistant coach with a Vancouver 86ers side that won four straight Canadian Soccer League championships. Habermann played on both Canada's 1984 Olympic team and 1986 FIFA World Cup team.
