Providence Park, Portland, OR
TV: TSN2 - RADIO: TSN Radio 1040

STORYLINES, PRESENTED BY THE PROVINCE

HOME AWAY FROM HOME: Whitecaps FC play the first of six regular season home matches south of the border. The 'Caps have played 14 matches in their MLS history at Providence Park, including playoffs, winning two and drawing five. The seven total matches where VWFC earned a result at Providence Park is the second-most they have in any away venue, behind only Dignity Health Sports Park (formerly Home Depot Center and StubHub Center, home to LA Galaxy and since-dissolved Chivas USA). The 'Caps also spent a portion of their 2020 preseason camp in Portland.

CASCADIAN TWIST: With the 'Caps hosting the Timbers on their own pitch, Sunday provides a new twist to the old rivalry. A familiar figure is 33-year old Fredy Montero, who has scored four goals at Providence Park in his career, his highest in any away venue behind only Toyota Stadium in Frisco, TX. Clint Dempsey and Chris Wondolowski are the only visiting players to have scored more goals at Providence Park with five. Old 'Caps nemesis Diego Valeri continues to lead the Timbers with six goals and five assists on the season at age 34.

THE FINAL TEN: The 'Caps enter the last 10 matches of the revised 23-game regular season schedule at 15 points and right in the thick of the playoff race. Whitecaps FC look to get settled at their temporary home, where they play seven of their remaining slate. Sunday's match is the first of two against the Timbers, who go into the weekend tied with Sounders FC atop of the West with 21 points. The Timbers won the MLS is Back Tournament this past summer in Florida.

NEW TO THE DERBY: The rivalry welcomes new attacking players from each side. Designated Players Lucas Cavallini, Yimmi Chara, and Jaroslaw Niezgoda get their first taste of the derby, as well as 'Caps attacking midfielders/wingers Cristian Dajome and David Milinkovic.
