Adnan scores winner for Iraq in 2-1 win over Uzbekistan

Adnan Iraq vs. Uzbekistan

Ali Adnan captained the Iraqi national team and scored the game-winning goal on Tuesday in a 2-1 win over Uzbekistan.

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC defender capitalized in the 85th minute, slotting a penalty kick into the bottom left corner.

Adnan started the match as a left wingback and played the full 90 minutes.

It was the defender’s sixth goal and 58th cap for the Lions after also appearing as a substitute in last Thursday’s scoreless draw with Jordan.

The friendlies were Iraq’s first matches in almost a year as they resume preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification. Iraq sat atop Group C in Round 2 prior to competition coming to a pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Adnan is coming off his second season with Whitecaps FC and was honoured as the club's 2020 BMO Player of the Year. He played 22 of the 'Caps 23 regular season matches, making 20 starts and scoring two goals and five assists.
