Canada advance to final round of World Cup qualifying for first time since 1996-97

Canada vs. Haiti second leg

Canada advanced to the final stage of World Cup qualifying for the first time since 1996-97 with a 4-0 aggregate series win over Haiti.

The Red and White will now compete with seven other countries in a double-round octagonal group stage, with the top three teams advancing to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, and the fourth place team moving on to an intercontinental playoff. Canada seek their first World Cup birth since 1986 by facing Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, and the United States.

Carrying a 1-0 advantage from the first leg, Canada closed it out with a 3-0 result in their defacto home match in Bridgeview, Illinois on Tuesday. The opening goal came early in the second half on a moment of fortune.

Later, Cyle Larin broke in on net for Canada's second.

Substitute Junior Hoilett put the match away in the final moments, tucking home his own rebound.

Whitecaps FC BMO Academy
graduate Alphonso Davies started the match, along with former 'Caps centre back Doneil Henry. Fellow academy graduate Sam Adekugbe subbed on in the second half.
With this set of international matches now complete, Whitecaps FC striker
Lucas Cavallini
will return to join the 'Caps in Utah ahead of Friday's match against Real Salt Lake (7 p.m. PT on TSN1, 6 p.m. pre-match on AM730).
