'Caps put in strong second half performance as quest for final continues

VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC Girls Elite recorded a 4-1 loss against Varsity FC at Ken Woods Field this Sunday afternoon.

The result clinched Varsity FC's spot in the inaugural League1 BC championship final on Monday, August 1 at Swangard Stadium. The 'Caps remain in contention to oppose them in the final, needing a win in either of their final two matches at TSS Rovers or at home to Rivers FC to clinch their own spot.

The first half saw the 'Caps finding the breakthrough, as Anna Hauer fed a ball connecting to Sierra Bergen. The forward broke in on goal and found the back of the net in the 21st minute.

As the home side continued to push, Varsity FC responded moments later, with Sophie Damian's short pass finding Katelyn Erhardsen, a former member of the Whitecaps FC Girls Elite program, in the final third. The midfielder then levelled the game 1-1 in the 31st minute of the match.

Despite the Blue & White's multiple opportunities created throughout the half, Varsity's Erhardsen chipped a ball in to substitute forward Jenna Baxter, another former member of the Whitecaps FC Girls Elite program, who gave her squad a 2-1 lead right before the end of the half.

In a quick turn of events, Baxter found herself on a one-on-one situation, with her quick strike extending her squad's lead to 3-1 in the 46th minute of the first half.

The second half began with the young 'Caps pushing on, as they looked to find answers with some momentum control obtained in the midfield.

As the match progressed, a turn around move inside the box from Anna Hauer led to the striker having a strong opportunity, which was held off by goalkeeper Sarah Johns in the 79th minute.

Later on in the second half, Erhardsen placed a ball in the midfield to Varsity teammate Baxter, with the substitute forward completing her hat trick to wrap-up the result in the 87th minute of the match.

VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC BMO Academy U-19 boys continued their League1 BC campaign with a 2-1 loss against Varsity FC at Ken Woods Field this Sunday afternoon.

The result clinched Varsity's spot in the Monday, August 1 League1 BC championship final at Swangard Stadium, where they will face TSS Rovers.

The first half started with the young 'Caps opening the scoring in the 24th minute, as Gurman Sangha's pass inside the box from the left flank of the field connected to Luke Norman, who's strike found the back of the cage, giving his squad a 1-0 lead.

As the match progressed, 'Caps goalkeeper Marshall Herald strongly parried away a Varsity FC opportunity in the 39th minute.

The half continued with the away side tying the game, as Victory Shumbusho's shot was pushed away by Herald, but Manmeet Jhutty then followed up with a rebound finish in the 43rd minute of the match.

The second half began with the away side pressuring the Blue & White on the midfield. As Varsity continued to press, former Whitecaps FC BMO Academy midfielder Thomas Gardner's powerful strike curled to the top corner of the net in the 59th minute, giving his squad a 2-1 lead in the process.

As time ticked down throughout the rest of the match, the 'Caps would not give up as they hunted for the equalizer, fighting off Varsity's physical battles and pressure in the midfield.
