Month-in-Review: May

Celebration - Koffie goal - black and white - May 30

VANCOUVER, BC – Another month is in the books for Vancouver Whitecaps FC – and it was a busy one with a total of seven matches in all competitions.

Here are some of the highlights.

BEST GOAL

No debate here.

Gershon Koffie gets the nod for his screamer on Saturday vs. Real Salt Lake. It wasn’t just the strike, which was world class, it was also the way he read the play to pick Joao Plata’s pocket in the build-up.

Pretty good way to celebrate your 100th MLS regular season start, I’d say.

CANADIAN DIRECT INSURANCE SAVE OF THE MONTH

There were plenty to choose from, but it has to David Ousted’s last-ditch reaction save against Philadelphia Union – also known as “The Save.”

BEST ASSIST

I’m going to give this one to Cristian Techera for his perfectly weighted throughball to Pedro Morales, which also came in that big 3-0 win over Philly.

MONTH OF FIRSTS

It was a month of firsts for Techera and a few of his Whitecaps FC teammates.

Techera, a 5-foot-2 Uruguayan, picked up his first goal in a Whitecaps FC uniform – as did Matias Laba, whose stoppage-time game-winner against FC Edmonton sent Whitecaps FC to the Amway Canadian Championship Final.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Paolo Tornaghi made his much-anticipated first appearance for the club – and his teammates couldn’t be happier for him.

BEST CELEBRATION

Koffie had a pretty good one, but Techera just edges him with his boot-turned-phone celebration.

“I told my family I’d score a goal and send it to them,” Techera explained.

Month-in-Review: May -

BIG PICTURE

In league play, Whitecaps FC posted a respectable 2W-2L-1D record in the month of May.

They began the month with a pair of clean sheets in a scoreless road draw at Portland Timbers and a 3-0 win over Philadelphia, before suffering back-to-back shutout defeats at the hands of Seattle Sounders FC and Colorado Rapids.

Finally, the ‘Caps bounced back with a big 2-1 win over Real Salt Lake this past weekend and therefore remain second in the Western Conference with 23 points from a total of 14 matches.
