VANCOUVER, BC – Vancouver Whitecaps FC defender Tate Johnson has been called up to United States' U-20 side for their upcoming June international window, the federation confirmed on Friday.
The team will face off against Colombia's U-20 side in an international friendly on Saturday, June 7. Kickoff from Cairo International Stadium in Nasr City, Egypt is set for 11 a.m. PT. Johnson and the U-20s will then wrap up the window against Egypt on Tuesday, June 10.
This marks the first time Johnson has been called up to represent his country at any level.
The 19-year-old Generation adidas and University of North Carolina product, who was selected 15th overall by Whitecaps FC in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft, has started 14 of his 18 appearances across all competitions in his first season with the club. Johnson has also been active offensively, scoring his first professional goal in the 2-0 victory over CF Montréal on March 8 and registering his first assist for the 'Caps in the 2-0 win against Colorado Rapids on April 5.
Prior to making the move to Vancouver, Johnson made 17 starts during his freshman season at North Carolina. He also had previous experience at the professional level before joining the 'Caps, making three starts and 10 appearances with USL Championship side Tampa Bay Rowdies in 2022, as well as five starts and 10 appearances in MLS NEXT Pro with Crown Legacy FC in 2023.
