MEXICO CITY, MX – The Whitecaps FC development group played their first match on their trip in Mexico on Monday, falling 3-0 to a U-23 side from Liga MX club Deportivo Toluca FC.
The home side opened the scoring early after a turnover in midfield, then doubled the lead on 30 minutes.
The ‘Caps came out strong in the second half, putting pressure on the Mexican side. Jefferson Alade was stopped by the goalkeeper on a breakaway on 65 minutes. Theo Bair was also stopped by the keeper on another breakaway on goal three minutes later. Those two players combined on 74 minutes with Alade heading a cross from Bair just wide of net.
Toluca countered the pressure to find a third goal for the final score on 76 minutes.
Next up for the young ‘Caps prospects is a match vs. another Liga MX U-23 side, Cruz Azul, on Wednesday.
