Canada one win away from the Olympics, advance to semifinals after 1-1 draw with Honduras

Canada advanced to the semifinals of the Concacaf Olympic qualifying tournament following a 1-1 draw against Honduras on Thursday.

The Red & White finished in second place in Group B and will now face Mexico on Sunday with the winner advancing to the final and qualifying for the Olympics this summer. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. PT live on OneSoccer following Canada's men's national team World Cup qualifying match against Cayman Islands at 1 p.m. PT.

For a second consecutive match, four Whitecaps FC players started the match, with a fifth subbing on, and a former 'Caps player also starting. Derek Cornelius continued to captain the team at centre back, and three Whitecaps FC BMO Academy System products started in front of him: Michael Baldisimo and Patrick Metcalfe in midfield, with Theo Bair at striker. 'Caps academy grad David Norman started alongside Cornelius at centre back. Ryan Raposo subbed on in the second half.

A pair of Whitecaps FC players combined for the opening goal when Metcalfe whipped in a terrific cross that was met by a diving header from Cornelius for 1-0. Honduras was quick to respond with a header of their own to make it 1-1 after 30 minutes.

No goals would come in the second half as the young Canadians now prepare for a big match on Sunday.
