WEEKLY STORYLINES

A FAMILIAR FOE: After claiming a last gasp, come-from-behind victory over Los Angeles Galaxy in their final group stage match, Vancouver Whitecaps FC continue their Leagues Cup 2023 campaign with a Round of 32 showdown against a familiar foe in LIGA MX side Tigres UANL on Friday, August 4 at BC Place. Friday's clash will mark the third all-time meeting between the 'Caps and the Tigers, with the teams previously facing each other in the semifinals of the 2016/17 Concacaf Champions League. Tigres eventually won the two-match series 4-1 on aggregate. This season, Tigres' roster features five players who played against the Blue and White back in 2017, including striker André-Pierre Gignac, winger Luis Quiñones, defensive midfielder Guido Pizarro, fullback Javier Aquino, and goalkeeper Nahuel Guzmán.

JULY FORM: Heading into Friday's match and the month of August, several 'Caps players find themselves in form after key performances in July. Attacking midfielder Ryan Gauld continued his torrid run on Sunday against the Galaxy as he notched an assist on the game-winning goal, bringing his totals to eight goals and seven assists in his last 11 appearances across all competitions. The Scotsman, who joined the 'Caps exactly two years ago in 2021, now sits as the club's all-time leader in assists during the MLS era with 28 helpers and has reached 50 goal contributions for Whitecaps FC. Meanwhile, forward Brian White scored his 12th goal in 2023 on Sunday night, equaling his best scoring season with the club back in 2021. White is the highest-scoring American at the club level across all competitions this season, with FC Dallas striker Jesús Ferreira sitting closely behind him with 11 goals. Venezuelan striker Sergio Córdova has also been in form as of late, scoring four goals in his last four appearances for Vancouver.

LEAGUES CUP EXPLAINED: The inaugural 2023 Leagues Cup will see all 29 MLS clubs and all 18 LIGA MX clubs compete in a World Cup-style tournament to crown the best team between the two leagues, with the eventual winner qualifying directly to the Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16.
