WEEKLY STORYLINES
START AS YOU MEAN TO GO ON: It was a dominant, professional showing from Vancouver Whitecaps FC in their opening match of the 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs on Sunday thanks to a 3-0 victory over FC Dallas to take the lead in their Round One, Best-of-3 Series. The match, which took place in front of an MLS Cup Playoffs club-record crowd of 32,066, marked the 'Caps third home playoff victory in their MLS era and the second straight year they've won a playoff game at BC Place by a score of 3-0. Daniel RĆos opened the scoring with his fourth goal across all competitions, while Thomas Müller added a second thanks to his ninth goal of the season to bring him up to 13 goal contributions with the club. Kenji Cabrera then added the insurance marker, his second goal for the club and first at home, after a hard-fought assist from Homegrown product Rayan Elloumi. The win also saw the Blue and White become the only the second team in league history to hold its opponent to zero shots in an MLS Cup Playoffs match.
JOB'S NOT DONE: The 'Caps will now take their series lead to Frisco, Texas, in the hopes of securing their passage through to the Western Conference Semifinals, which will see the playoff format move to a single-match knockout through to MLS Cup. Vancouver has had plenty of success in their recent visits to Toyota Stadium, tallying a record of 4W-1L-3D in Frisco dating back to July 2017. In fact, the 'Caps have taken all three points in their previous two visits thanks to a 1-0 victory back in March and a 3-1 win in 2024. If necessary, the third and final match of the series will be played at BC Place on Friday, November 7. If the 'Caps progress to the Conference Semifinals, they will host the match at BC Place.
BOX TO BOX: Sunday's win over Dallas continued to spell more history for the 'Caps in what's been a memorable 2025 campaign. The Blue and White extended their club-record goals scored in a season to 97, further eclipsing the mark of 91 set in 1988, while recording their 17th clean sheet across all competitions. It was also the 16th victory at BC Place this season, the fourth 3-0 victory of the season, and the 15th time the 'Caps have scored three or more goals in a match this year, with 14 of those results ending in wins.
