WEEKLY STORYLINES

FINAL THIRD: After reaching the Round of 32 of the inaugural Leagues Cup 2023, Vancouver Whitecaps FC return to MLS regular season action on Sunday, August 20 as they take on fellow Western Conference side San Jose Earthquakes at BC Place. The sixth-placed Earthquakes sit a single point ahead of the seventh-placed 'Caps, who hold one or two games in hand on teams currently sitting in the Western Conference playoff places. With 12 regular season games remaining, the ‘Caps have already scored 38 goals, the second-most goals in the conference, and are on pace to beat the club record of 54 set in 2018.

MAPLE LEAF STRONG: The 'Caps were active in the final days of MLS' transfer window, acquiring Canadian international wingbacks Sam Adekugbe and Richie Laryea. Adekugbe, who joined via transfer from Turkish Süper Lig side Hatayspor, agreed to a contract through 2026, with a club option for 2027. The 28-year-old originally came through the Whitecaps FC BMO MLS Academy, having signed for the first team back in August 2013. Meanwhile, Laryea is on loan with the club through to the end of 2023 from English Premier League side Nottingham Forest. Laryea, also 28, most recently spent the first half of the season with Toronto FC, recording two goals, as well as four assists, in 19 starts across all competitions. The pair each made three appearances with Canada at the 2022 FIFA Men's World Cup Qatar.

WHITE GAULD: Heading into Matchday 27 action, attacking midfielder Ryan Gauld and forward Brian White find themselves leading the way for the 'Caps offence. Dating back to May 31, Gauld has tallied eight goals and seven assists in his last 12 appearances across all competitions. The Scotsman, who was named the club's GE Appliances Player of the Month for July, now sits as the club's all-time leader in assists during the MLS era with 28 helpers and has reached 50 goal contributions for Whitecaps FC. Meanwhile, forward Brian White equaled his best scoring season with the club with his goal against Los Angeles Galaxy on July 30, reaching 12 strikes across all competitions. White is the highest-scoring American at the club level across all competitions this season, with FC Dallas striker Jesús Ferreira sitting closely behind him with 11 goals.
