10 questions: Chris Serban shares back-to-school tips with fellow UBC students

10 Questions - Chris Serban

It's back to school week and who's better to dish out the essentials than Whitecaps FC 2 defender Chris Serban, who moonlights as a left back for the UBC Thunderbirds during the university soccer season.

The reigning CIS Rookie of the Year sat down with whitecapsfc2.com this week and talked about class clowns, campus hangout spots and what UBC students would enjoy at WFC2 matches. (Hint: It rhymes with deer.)

1. What's your favourite spot at UBC?

Just outside the Sauder School of Business building. There's a fountain there and it's beautiful when it's not raining. When it is raining, which is most of the time, I hang out at Sauder with my classmates.

2. What's your favourite subject?

I took GEO102 which was fun. I learned about the weather system and how tornadoes form hurricanes. I'm majoring in business so I should probably stick to a subject I'm going to be using more often.

3. What's the best part of being a student-athlete?

Going away on trips with the team. It's nice because we get excused from classes. We get to go play games instead of going to class (laughs). That's never a bad thing.

4. What's a must-have for your first day of school?

I don't really bring anything on the first day. The teacher just shows you the syllabus and what you'll need, so maybe just something for taking down notes.

5. Brett Levis played in your conference in the CIS. Does he ever remind you that they won the championship?

Every now and then. That was his first time so I'll let him have it.

6. Is Whitecaps FC 2 head coach Alan Koch more of a teacher or a principal?

He's more of a teacher. During training, he's always showing me what to do. He's a great motivator and he tells me what I did well.

7. Which WFC2 player would you vote for class president?

Mitch Pirauxand Brett have been the sheriffs because they collect the fines when you're late. They keep us in line so they'd make a good class president.

8. Who is the class clown on WFC2?

Victor Blascois always funny, he's always joking around.Jordan Hayneshas his days too. One day, he'd be happy making jokes. Next day, he'd be sad (laughs).

9. Complete the sentence. My WFC2 teammates would vote me as the one most likely to...

That's tough. I'll say I'm most likely to own a company because I'm a business major.

10. What can UBC students look forward to at the remaining Whitecaps FC 2 matches at Thunderbird Stadium?

Great soccer and great atmosphere. There's beer, I'm sure they'll like that. Live bands and great food too!

Serban and Whitecaps FC 2 finish their inaugural season with a three-match homestand at Thunderbird Stadium beginning on Sunday, September 6 when they host defending champion Sacramento Republic FC. Click here for tickets.
