WEEKLY STORYLINES
WEST'S BEST: Best in the West. That's where Vancouver Whitecaps FC sit heading into Matchday 23 of MLS regular season action following a thrilling 5-0 victory at BC Place against FC Dallas. The result saw the 'Caps reclaim first place in the conference, marking their best 20-game start to an MLS regular season (12W-4L-4D) as well as the quickest they've reached 40 points in an MLS regular season campaign. In addition, Vancouver now sits first in MLS in goal differential with +27 as well as a game in hand on Supporters' Shield-leading Nashville SC (15W-2L-4D, 49 points). The 'Caps continue to score in bunches under head coach Jesper Sørensen, recording three or more goals in 27 of his 82 games at the helm (33%). That has also resulted in the 'Caps widening their expected goals difference over the rest of the league, sitting first with a whopping 29.7 (Inter Miami CF sit second with 9.30). On the defensive end of the pitch, the 'Caps have the least expected goals conceded (16.7), the most tackles per match (20.3), and sit fourth in clean sheets (8).
LATINO FLURRY: Along with the rest of the group, the 'Caps Latin contingent has been a big part of the team's success in 2026. Led by Paraguay's FIFA World Cup 2026™ standout Andrés Cubas, the defensive midfielder showed his abilities at both ends of the pitch against Dallas, tallying his fourth assist of the season while posting 13 successful duels won as well as 11 tackles. In fact, Cubas leads MLS in tackles per 90 with 5.40. Meanwhile, U22 Initiative Colombian right back Édier Ocampo has become a focal point of the 'Caps attack. Ocampo, who was named to the MLS Team of the Matchday after his goal and assist performance against Dallas, leads the team in assists with eight and crosses from open play with 54. Another U22 Initiative signing in Ecuadorian winger Bruno Caicedo has also been a key attacking influence since arriving in Vancouver, tallying three goals and three assists in 391 minutes of MLS action. At the back, versatile Uruguayan defender Mathías Laborda leads the team in aerial challenges won with 37 and is second on the team in clearances with 15, while also chipping in on the offensive side of the game with three goals.
KICKING IT IN KANSAS: Up next for the Blue and White is a road match at Sporting Kansas City this Saturday, August 29. Despite sitting at the bottom of the league standings, Kansas City have only dropped two of their last six home matches to visiting opponents. The 'Caps have had their fair share of recent success against SKC, winning the last five meetings by a combined score of 12-2 and tallying a record of 7W-1L-1D in the last nine meetings dating back to April 2022. Saturday's clash will mark the second and final encounter of the regular season between the sides, with the 'Caps earning a 3-0 victory over Sporting at BC Place on April 17 thanks to goals from Emmanuel Sabbi, Bruno Caicedo, and Thomas Müller.

COLIN MILLER'S KEYS TO THE MATCH
- Be organized defensively
SKC are dangerous on the break.
As I've said before, we must be organized defensively when we have the ball.
- Don't show complacency
SKC have the worst defensive record in the West.
We must not show any complacency and go for the jugular right away.
- Great standards
Last week's against Dallas was full of quality, confidence, and energy.
We are setting great standards, which means competition for playing time is picking up.
This is only a good thing!
