WEEKLY STORYLINES

FAMILIAR FOES: Vancouver Whitecaps FC are set to renew acquaintances against familiar foes Los Angeles FC in the 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs Round One Best-of-3 Series, with the Black and Gold hosting the first game this Saturday, October 28 at BMO Stadium. The match will mark the fifth meeting of the year between the two sides, having met as recently as last Saturday in an entertaining 1-1 draw at BC Place in front of over 25,000 fans. In their last visit to BMO Stadium, the Blue and White claimed a thrilling 3-2 victory against LAFC in June, with Ryan Gauld, Brian White, and Ranko Veselinović finding the back of the net. The previous two meetings against the side came in April in Concacaf Champions League action.

NEW PLAYOFF FORMAT: This year's playoffs feature the introduction of the Round One Best-of-3 Series. The matches will include a home-away-home format, with LAFC carrying home advantage heading into the series. The 'Caps will host the second match at BC Place on Sunday, November 5, which will be the club's first home playoff match since 2017. Every match will have a winner, meaning if both teams are tied at the end of regulation, the winner of the match will be decided via kicks from the spot. The first team to win two matches in the series will advance to the Western Conference semifinals, awaiting the winner between Seattle Sounders FC and FC Dallas. If necessary, LAFC will host the third and final match of the series at BMO Stadium on Thursday, November 9.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME: The 'Caps have made California their second home in 2023. Along with their preseason trip to Palm Springs, the Blue and White had a total of five matches across the Golden State, playing twice at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson and BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, as well as their lone MLS match at PayPal Park in San Jose earlier this season. The team's last trip to California saw them claim a 2-1 victory over Los Angeles Galaxy in Leagues Cup action, with Brian White notching a late game-winner.
